Ortiz Avenue Widening

Lee County, FL — This widening project extends a distance of approximately 2.5 miles from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (SR 82) on the south to Palm Beach Boulevard (SR 80) on the north. The project also includes the addition of turn lanes at several cross streets and the widening of approximately 0.75 miles of Luckett Road from two to four lanes. Ortiz Avenue is currently a two-lane undivided rural roadway and will be upgraded to a four-lane divided urban roadway. The project also includes bike lanes and sidewalks in each direction, along with a 44-foot wide median that allows for future widening. In addition, the existing open ditch drainage system will be upgraded to a closed, storm sewer system with off-site ponds.

While the typical section for the project was determined during an initial corridor analysis, the actual roadway alignment was not. During the preliminary stages of the design process, various alignment alternatives and pond sites were developed and presented to the County so they could begin acquiring right-of-way at an accelerated schedule. AIM’s survey staff re-established the historic alignment and obtained the right-of-way control to further assist the County with their acquisition process. In addition, the survey team processed title searches, created right-of-way maps and wrote legal descriptions. AIM also provided design survey, roadway plans preparation, drainage design, environmental permitting, signal design, utility locates and clearances, and coordination with local officials and property owners.
